Doré shows the Crusaders at the exact moment faith becomes a marching order. A single angel descends above the army, bright against the dark sky, holding the banners they believe will guide them to victory. The soldiers below react in different ways — some stunned, others determined, others simply following the crowd. Doré doesn't glorify the scene; he presents it as a mix of conviction, fear, and momentum.
The engraving's strength lies in its contrast. The angel is sharply illuminated, almost weightless, while the mass of Crusaders feels heavy and grounded. That tension tells the story: belief lifting an army that may not fully understand where it's being led, only that something larger than them seems to demand it.
