This painting is a singular study in magnificent defeat and technical execution. Cabanel, though known for the polished smoothness of the French Salon, here delivers a figure charged with visceral Romantic intensity. The canvas depicts Lucifer immediately following his expulsion from Heaven, defeated, defiant, and cast down.
The technical strength lies in the masterful rendering of the muscular, athletic form, which adheres to the highest standards of academic drawing. Note the intentional posture: the arm shields the face not out of shame, but to focus the intense rage burning in the eyes, which is underscored by the single, meticulously painted tear glinting with divine sorrow. The contrast between the dark, tangible, earthy figure and the pale blue, almost abstract background—where the blurred, ascending forms of the victorious angels are fighting—creates the painting's powerful dynamic. This is a canvas defined by its technical perfection and its bold, psychological narrative of eternal rebellion.
