The Seven Works of Mercy
The Seven Works of Mercy
Caravaggio - 1607

In this dense, nighttime tableau, Caravaggio compresses all seven traditional works of mercy — feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead — into a single, chaotic moment on the streets of Naples. Instead of treating them like tidy moral illustrations, he lets them collide: a prisoner is fed through iron bars, a corpse is carried out for burial, a beggar receives clothing, a thirsty man is offered drink, and so on, each scene overlapping the next in a way that feels lived rather than staged. It's Caravaggio at his most grounded — mercy shown not as idealized virtue, but as something raw, physical, and immediate.
Above this turmoil, angels drift into the light, not with grandeur but as quiet witnesses. Their presence says what Caravaggio always believed: the divine is found in human action, especially the hard, inconvenient acts of compassion that take place in the shadows of everyday life.
