In Christ and the Mocking Soldier (c. 1880), Carl Bloch reduces the scene to two faces and a single question: where do you stand? The helmeted soldier leans in, shouting into Christ's ear, his mouth twisted, his eyes burning with crude delight. His hand grips Christ's shoulder and clutches the reed — the false sceptre of a false king — while the crown of thorns cuts into Christ's brow. All the noise, the hatred, and the brute force of this episode are compressed into this single figure, pressed to the edge of the frame.

Christ, however, does not look at him. He looks directly at us instead, with an expression that is tired, deeply human, and strangely calm. This gaze is the heart of the painting. Bloch is not interested in spectacle here; he is interested in confrontation. The darkness closes in around them, the red cloak glows faintly, and the light falls on Christ's face like a silent accusation. The soldier shows how easily we can mock and wound; Christ's eyes ask whether we recognise ourselves in that gesture — and what we choose to do with that recognition.
