Exodus 14:19–20:
19 "And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:"
20 "And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night."
Doré shows the moment the angel of God moves to shield the Israelites during their escape from Egypt. The figure stands at the edge of the sea, wings lifted, illuminated by a break in the clouds that feels almost physical. Below, the people gather in expectation, caught between danger behind them and the unknown ahead. Doré doesn't crowd the scene with drama — the angel's gesture is enough.
What gives the engraving its force is the contrast between heaven's light and the rough, dark terrain around it. The angel becomes a boundary, a line drawn between pursuit and protection. Doré captures the tension of the passage: a nation waiting, a divine presence stepping in, and the sense that something impossible is about to happen.
