Gustave Moreau's Dejanira (Autumn) folds myth into dream. Drawn from the story of Dejanira—the wife of Hercules, whose tragic gift would one day bring about his death—Moreau paints not the famous climax, but a moment suspended in ambiguity. Dejanira is carried off by the centaur Nessus, yet the scene feels less like an abduction and more like a vision dissolving into mist. Moreau avoids narrative clarity on purpose: he lets the myth surface through gesture, not explanation.

The landscape does most of the storytelling. Autumn burns through the trees, cliffs fade into veils of gold and shadow, and the figures seem to glow as if they're part of the forest's own fever. Moreau was fascinated by myth as inner symbolism rather than literal event, and you feel that here—Dejanira's body is luminous, but the world around her is unstable, emotional, almost hallucinatory. It's not about what happens, but about the fatal mood that precedes it.
